Marketers play on our fears and they love to tap into our FOMO – SCN Encourager
Experts say we all share the “Fear of Missing Out.”
They’re wrong.
I don’t.
Other people may be susceptible this manipulative emotional ploy.
I’m not.
Marketers can’t use their appeal “to be included” on me.
I’m immune.
Even their tried and true alternate ploy – the appeal to an artificial sense of urgency – has no effect on me.
Now, you might think I’m a pretty lucky guy…
to be able to stare down FOMO with nary a whimper.
But I actually have a long list of fears that confines me to my comfort zone.
The first is FOGA.
While others may fear “missing out” –
I have the Fear of Getting Assigned.
I’ll take FOMO any day of the week.
When you have “other duties as assigned” in your contract, FOMO’s a gift!
Here are the other fears that round out my Top Ten.
And the reasons are so obvious, no explanations are needed.
#2 FOLD – the Fear of Looming Deadlines
#3 FOFS – the Fear of Forgetting Something
#4 FOGC – the Fear of Getting Caught
#5 FOWP – the Fear of Wrong Place
#6 FOWT – the Fear of Wrong Time
#7 FOLR – the Fear of Lost Remote
#8 FOLM – the Fear of Long Meetings
#9 FOMT – the Fear of Missed Typos
#10 FOLF – the Fear of Looking Foolish
You might think having such a long list would be discouraging.
It’s not so bad.
I’m knocking down my fears one-by-one.
In fact, I’m proud of the progress I’m making on #10.
And I offer up today’s Encourager as proof.
