Remember Westjet’s fantastic Christmas video? – SCN Encourager 1/24/2014

All of our snow has me humming holiday carols.

When I’m not cussing about shoveling or scraping it, that is.

About a month ago, I emailed you the link to WestJet Airlines amazing holiday video.

Screen Shot 2013-12-16 at 2.48.48 PMI can hardly describe for you – let alone even imagine – the wild ride of success this short heart-to-heart video has enjoyed.

Here’s the link.

35 million views worldwide on YouTube for a non-edgy, non-sexy holiday video is unreal.

Rick Mulready is one of the online marketing and communications experts I follow.

Screen Shot 2014-01-23 at 11.07.23 AMOver the last year or so, I’ve really been sharpening up my “following skills” and I’ve always found his insights practical and thought-inspiring.

And in this instance — totally pass-a-long-able. (aka “shareable”)

Rick has a weekly marketing podcast and he interviewed the two WestJet communicators who created and managed the holiday video from storyboard concept to YouTube sensation.

Rick believes that this particular episode is one of his best because the marketing and branding lessons it contains are applicable for every small business and organization.

I agree.

Yes, he touches on the basics:
•  Be genuine.
•  Be authentic.
•  Create a remarkable experience for your fans.

But Rick gets the two WestJet communication specialists to talk about some of their specific behind-the-scenes tactics.

Wonderful ideas charted out on a whiteboard doesn’t get anyone out of the starting block.

Moving from “good to great” requires clear vision, a coordinated plan, targeted resources, and some talented and energetic people (very much like the school communicators, I know).

The weekend’s coming up.

Here’s the link to the podcast.

You might find some value in listening to it.

I certainly did.

But please don’t let my personal endorsement cause you to disqualify it.

I’ll be here on Monday. Hope you’ll check in!
